121 Captions leads the field in bridging the gap between the hearing and deaf communities.
A group of independent professionals came together in 2009 and the idea grew into 121 Captions. This group initially worked on assignments such as supplying speech to text for a deaf consultant in all her meetings, captioning international teleconference calls for a deaf professional, supplying transcripts of podcasts for an educational institution, providing sign language interpreters for a deaf entrepreneur at various social events in London, lipreading CCTV for the police and ransom tapes for the newsrooms, and providing deaf awareness consultancy and bespoke training to a team of hearing colleagues with a new deaf member of staff.
Today, deaf and hard of hearing people are actively involved at all levels of 121 Captions, bringing a unique insight and wealth of experience that no other communication firm offers. Based on years of experience, we offer an “inside-out” view of meeting client needs, as opposed to other companies who offer an “outside-in” service.
Our core team are experts at what they do, using their skills on a daily basis to communicate with people around them in a number of languages. Our team are made up of professional lipreaders, lipreading teachers, deaf awareness trainers and British Sign Language trainers working in a number of languages. We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Our services are also provided by a specially selected pool of freelance professionals, affiliated to international associations and bringing many areas of expertise to the firm. Some of our freelance associates are bilingual, including remote captioners offering a realtime speech to text service and lipreaders offering a translation service for hearing people (e.g. Arabic to English transcription of a silent video).
121 Captions works with a range of public and private sector clients. Clients include blue chip corporations, educational and cultural institutions, health care providers, law firms and the courts, the police, and private investigators.
